HISTORY OF S'ESTANYOL AND FISHING HOUSES
Following the construction of the S'Estalella tower in 1577, a small number of fishermen and torrers (men who built the towers) settled in the area. But it is not really until the 19th century that we have evidence that the lords of S'Estalella -called Ca'n Jacket- gave some land to those fishermen who wanted to build a barrack.
We know that these inhabitants were mostly fishermen, although they must also have been sharecroppers, seaweed collectors or smugglers, extremely hard jobs and unflattering living conditions. The fish and salt collected from the cocons were exchanged for basic necessities (wheat, meat, fruit, etc.) with the owners of nearby possessions.
During the 14th to 18th centuries, the southern coast of Majorca was subject to the continuous threat of barbarian corsair expeditions. Camalls, Cartogol and Barba Roja did not allow the defenders of the southern coast of Mallorca to calm down. The towers of S'Estalella, Cabo Blanco, Cap Enderrocat and Cala Pi are witnesses of those struggles.
The first written testimony is from the Archduke Luis Salvador of Austria and dates back to 1884. The following description is made in it:
“This is how we arrive at Punta de S’Estanyol and the island of the same name, a place that welcomes the presence of seven cabins, three of them whitewashed, and two huts for boots next to a wide slipway…”.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Llucmajor City Council created the nucleus of S'Estanyol de Migjorn, and the fishermen left the town of Sa punta de S'Estalella. Since then, the owner family has been in charge of maintaining the town.
